On Wednesday we had a lab for the different states of matter and were told to just observe and interact with water and a penny to just observe what each state of matter does. We were then given a small challenge. After having mixed together cornstarch and water we made oobleck, a mysterious substance of which we were to find out what state of matter it was.
To make our oobleck we had to approximate a 1:1.75 ratio, which for our group meant half a beaker of water and a full tub of cornstarch. Through the mixing my group jumped right in while I decided to stay out of the messy part. From observing what happened to the oobleck when they messed with it, I thought that it must be of a more liquid state. But from the way it reacted when they tried different things such as rolling it in their hands and throwing it at the table, it was much like a solid. Upon applying heat, the moisture in the oobleck dried out and it converted back into its cornstarchy, powdery, solid form.
After continuing this for the next hour, I had come to the conclusion that it must be a solid. Although it reacted very very strangely when left alone, it always held a more solid position and simply acted like a wet solid. Once enough
